Directions: All About IFRA
We have IFRA on all fragrance oils and flavor oils on our website.
What do the maximum levels mean? Let's use Almond Paradise as an example. The IFRA guidelines on this state that there are no restrictions for soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc. So does that mean you can use 100% in your product? No. That would mean your product consists of straight fragrance oil.
The IFRA states the *max* that can be used, not the recommended amount. It is the responsibility of the maker to do their research to see what the recommended usage rate of fragrance oil for their particular recipe is.
For soap, as a general rule of thumb you will use up to 5% of fragrance oil in Cold Process (CP) soap and up to 3% in Melt and Pour (M&P) soap.
So, if you see a fragrance oil and the IFRA says 23% for soap, don't use 23%. IFRA is important when it comes to lower numbers. There are a few fragrance oils that have max usage rates that are less than the percentages shown above. In that case, you can only use the max shown for the oil.

COMMENTS: This is a really nice patchouli fragrance, but soaping at 90°, after adding this fragrance it seized solid before I could get it into the mold. I’d say try a small amount before adding to your whole batch to see how it reacts with your soap recipe. Advantages: Smells nice Disadvantages: Seizes

COMMENTS: This fragrance oil well in CP soap, but be prepared to move fast because it accelerates. It is my favorite FO from Rustic Escentuals. I use it in soap, bath bombs, roll-ons, and whipped butters. Advantages: Fragrance holds well in all applications. No discoloration. Disadvantages: Accelerates in cold process soap.

COMMENTS: This is a great scent. While I did experience acceleration, that could be attributed to my recipe. On the other side, customers love this scent. Looks like I'll order again and revamp my recipe and/or temperature. Advantages: Wonderful scent. Customers love it. Disadvantages: I experienced acceleration making me call it my 'holy soap' due to air pockets that come with super thick batter, but will be ordering more. Advantages outweigh Dis!

"Beautiful fragrance. Beha..."
COMMENTS: Beautiful fragrance. Behaved well in cp soap. A nice patchouli without being heady, a nice woodsy note to round it out. Advantages: Experienced no discoloration or A. Soap is a beautiful natural ivory color. Disadvantages: When adding this FO, it turned the soap batter a bright peach-orange color. But after a day of cure it disappeared.
