All About IFRA

We have IFRA on all fragrance oils and flavor oils on our website.

What do the maximum levels mean? Let's use Almond Paradise as an example. The IFRA guidelines on this state that there are no restrictions for soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc. So does that mean you can use 100% in your product? No. That would mean your product consists of straight fragrance oil.

The IFRA states the *max* that can be used, not the recommended amount. It is the responsibility of the maker to do their research to see what the recommended usage rate of fragrance oil for their particular recipe is.

For soap, as a general rule of thumb you will use up to 5% of fragrance oil in Cold Process (CP) soap and up to 3% in Melt and Pour (M&P) soap.

So, if you see a fragrance oil and the IFRA says 23% for soap, don't use 23%. IFRA is important when it comes to lower numbers. There are a few fragrance oils that have max usage rates that are less than the percentages shown above. In that case, you can only use the max shown for the oil.

"Lovely is a perfect name ..."
COMMENTS:  Lovely is a perfect name for this fragrance. It is very delicate and feminine but, holds up well in CP. I had no problems soaping with it in CP. I soaped around 115. F and had no acceleration, discoloration or ricing. Scent is on the lighter side but, holds up well even after a 6 week cure. Advantages: Beautiful feminine scent that soaps well in CP. Disadvantages: Scent is on the lighter side.

"I didn't know what this f..."
COMMENTS:  I didn't know what this fragrance was, but bought it and Green Irish Tweed based on the descriptions. I made a few test candles with Lovely and CB Advanced (the new stuff). I used 1.5 oz per lb. It wicked so easily. It smelled so good, very uplifting. It is now my guilty pleasure. Sarah Jessica Parker. I love this so much I made perfume saches in 1 oz screw top tins. In a 3" diameter container using htp 104 double wicked. Seemed to be a good burn. The scent is Lovely! Classy, different, calming, not overpowering, no headache for me and I am sensitive to perfumes. It is possible that another wick would work, CD, eco, but the htp is the one that did well and offered good throw. Other favorite FOs of mine are Molton Brown's Black Pepper, Coastal, and Sandalwood. Tom Ford's Black Orchid, and Tobacco Vanille, and Brown Sugar Fig, to give you an idea of my taste in general, which is pretty good but all over the place. Advantages: Easy to wick, clean burning, no jumpy flame, no soot. Seemed to be self trimming also, good melt pool. Lovely is a better FO, it's a good quality scent, not to chemical or powdery strangeness. It's not for everyone and smells better when melted or in warm water than OOB.

COMMENTS:  This was the scent that attracted me to Rustic Escentuals. I saw someone talking about it, and decided to give them a try. I'm so glad I did. Love this scent. It's not too overpowering, but the scent lasts through cold process soaping, which as a soap maker, it quite impressive. I also make lotions, butters and bath bombs with it. My customers love it. Advantages: Works well in cold process soaping. Did not accelerate trace or rice. I had plenty of time to design my soap batter. Disadvantages: none
