All About IFRA

We have IFRA on all fragrance oils and flavor oils on our website.

What do the maximum levels mean? Let's use Almond Paradise as an example. The IFRA guidelines on this state that there are no restrictions for soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc. So does that mean you can use 100% in your product? No. That would mean your product consists of straight fragrance oil.

The IFRA states the *max* that can be used, not the recommended amount. It is the responsibility of the maker to do their research to see what the recommended usage rate of fragrance oil for their particular recipe is.

For soap, as a general rule of thumb you will use up to 5% of fragrance oil in Cold Process (CP) soap and up to 3% in Melt and Pour (M&P) soap.

So, if you see a fragrance oil and the IFRA says 23% for soap, don't use 23%. IFRA is important when it comes to lower numbers. There are a few fragrance oils that have max usage rates that are less than the percentages shown above. In that case, you can only use the max shown for the oil.

"Review for CP soap"
COMMENTS:  Lovely and fresh. Does accelerate in CP soap, and heats up a fair bit in the mold...I would pop in the fridge if using again. Does end up a tiny bit crumbly/prone to cracks, so I'd skip the sodium lactate if you use it. Stays ivory after curing. The scent is beautiful, and stays fresh and true. After a lengthy cure, the gingery notes predominate, but the sweetness of pear lingers as well. Would definitely use this again.

"Used in CP soap with oils..."
COMMENTS:  Used in CP soap with oils and lye below 80°F so any acceleration concerns were minimal. Behaved well with wonderful scent retention weeks after cure. Smells wonderful in lotions as well. Advantages: Scent Disadvantages: Would like more time to do swirls in soaps

"Fragrance is awesome. My..."
COMMENTS:  Fragrance is awesome. My son loves it A LOT. Advantages: Great in wax melts, used ParaSoy blend. Long lasting in waxes. Disadvantages: Accelerated trace very quickly with my first time use in CP. Added fragrance at a light trace, gave stick blender about 4 pulses, hand mixed in exfoliate and ended up having to glop soap into mold. *Used green tea as liquid for lye water, not sure if this also helped in acceleration.

"I didn't like this partic..."
COMMENTS:  I didn't like this particular scent but I give it 5 stars for hot throw! I use 1oz per lb parasoy. I can definitely detect both the ginseng and the pear and I decided I didn't like the ginseng. However the scent is true to the name! Just not a personal preference for myself. Btw RE ships quickly and items are packed nicely! Advantages: Strong and true to name Disadvantages: It's just not a scent for me

"I love this scent. It is..."
COMMENTS:  I love this scent. It is very light and fresh smelling. Very unique. It did accelerate and got think really fast, but the scent is so worth working fast. Will definitely order again. Advantages: Light clean scent. No discoloration. Disadvantages: Accelerates so you need to work fast and better to hand mix in CP soap to slow the trace.

COMMENTS:  I love the scent. But as others have said it does accelerate trace in CP. I literally turned my back on very light traced batter and it was set up when I turned back to it ! Just be ready, this scent is totally worth it.

COMMENTS:  Smells great, I really love this fragrance. Be aware that it did speed up trace for me in CP soaps. It wasn't unmanageable, just moved fast. Advantages: Smells AWESOME! Very fresh and clean with a lovely sweet fruity note. Disadvantages: Speeds up trace, the soap batter got thick on me pretty fast.
